Djami Kebir Mosque: A Blend of History and Culture in Larnaca

The Djami Kebir Mosque, also known as the Great Mosque, is a significant cultural and historical site in Larnaca, Cyprus. Its story began as a Catholic church dedicated to St. Catherine in the 13th-14th century. Following the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus in 1571, it was transformed into a mosque, reflecting a common practice of converting Christian buildings during that era. The present mosque was constructed in 1835-1836 by Seyyid El-Hac Muhammed Aga, replacing an older, dilapidated structure. The two-story building is made of white stone and features a prominent minaret that is visible from various points in the city. The prayer hall is divided into three aisles by two arcades, with a women's gallery located above the entrance. While the interior is relatively modest, the mosque's historical and architectural importance makes it a notable place for both worshipers and tourists. Visitors can explore the mosque's surroundings, which include a fountain built in 1748, connected to the aqueducts of Ebubekir Pasha, designed to provide fresh water to the city.
