Discover more about Pierides Museum - Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation

Step back in time at the Pierides Museum, a treasure trove of Cypriot history located in the heart of Larnaca. Founded by the Pierides Foundation, this museum is the oldest private museum in Cyprus. The collection, initiated in 1839 by Demetrios Pierides, has been carefully assembled over five generations, with the aim of preserving Cyprus's antiquities and preventing the loss of the island's history. The museum is housed in the old residence of the Pierides family, a colonial-style building constructed in 1815. The exhibits cover a vast period, from the Neolithic era (7000-475 BC) through the Bronze Age, Geometric, Archaic, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Medieval ages. Visitors can explore five halls, each dedicated to specific periods and themes. Hall 1 features prehistoric finds, while Hall 2 showcases objects from the Archaic to Roman times. Hall 3 displays cartography from the mid-15th century through 1960, and Halls 4 and 5 exhibit Hellenistic and Roman glass, as well as Franconian ceramics. The museum's collection includes red polished ware from the Early Bronze Age, Roman glassware, and medieval ceramic dishes. Also on display are old maps of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. The Pierides Museum participates in the Larnaca Biennale, displaying contemporary art since 2018. A gift shop allows visitors to purchase replicas of the exhibits and artwork created by local artists.
