Discover more about Fikardou Rural Museum

The Fikardou Rural Museum, located in the village of Fikardou, provides a captivating glimpse into Cyprus's rural heritage. The village itself, situated 40 kilometers southwest of Nicosia on the eastern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, has been declared an Ancient Monument and carefully restored to preserve its 18th-century houses and folk architecture. Deserted in the early 19th century, Fikardou offers a tranquil atmosphere that transports visitors to another era. The museum is housed within two restored houses: the House of Katsinioros and the House of Achilleas Dimitri. The House of Katsinioros, named after its last owner, is a two-story stone manor with a steep wooden roof, showcasing architectural elements reminiscent of the 16th century. Inside, the upper floor is furnished to reflect the everyday life of a rural family, while the ground floor reveals the traditional functions of the house, with exhibits showcasing the grape pressing process, storage of agricultural produce, and tools. The House of Achilleas Dimitri has been transformed into a weaver's workshop and a guest house for scholars, adding another layer to the village's cultural significance. The museum also features an exhibition of photographs, drawings, and texts that document the restoration process of the houses, an effort recognized with the prestigious Europa Nostra Award in 1987. Visitors can also explore the village church, dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul, which dates back to the 16th century.
