Archbishop's Palace: A Baroque Masterpiece in Olomouc

The Archbishop's Palace in Olomouc stands as a testament to the city's rich history and architectural grandeur. Originally built in the Renaissance style in the early 16th century, the palace suffered damage during the Thirty Years' War and a fire in 1661. It was subsequently rebuilt and expanded in the Baroque style between 1664 and 1669 by Bishop Charles II Lichtenstein-Castelcorn. The palace acquired its present neo-Baroque appearance at the beginning of the 20th century, following a reconstruction after a fire in 1904.The palace has been the residence of Olomouc's bishops since the early 13th century, and archbishops since 1777. Its two-story structure features a richly decorated facade with three Baroque portals, arranged around two enclosed courtyards. Inside, visitors can admire preserved rooms with artistic decorations from the 17th to the early 20th centuries, along with period furnishings.The Archbishop's Palace has been the site of numerous important historical events, including visits by Maria Theresa, the enthronement of Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1848, and strategic planning against Napoleon's armies by Russian Tsar Alexander I and Austrian Emperor Franz. Pope John Paul II also had lunch in the Grand Hall.Today, visitors can take a tour of the representative halls on the first floor, which showcase Rococo, Empire, and neo-Baroque decorations. The tour also includes a room for temporary exhibitions. The palace is wheelchair accessible and offers specialized haptic tours.
