The Pomník Amerických Letců (Memorial to American Airmen) is a solemn and reflective site located near Bystrovany, in the Olomouc region of the Czech Republic. It stands as a tribute to the American airmen who lost their lives on April 25, 1945, when their B-17G Flying Fortress was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire. The bomber was part of the 92nd Bomb Group, 327th Squadron. Six members of the crew, including the commander 1st Lt. L.B. Fischer, perished in the crash. Two airmen managed to parachute to safety.The memorial marks the spot where the aircraft fell during a mission targeting the chemical plants in Záluží. In 1944, 143 planes were involved in a raid when four planes were shot down by German anti-aircraft artillery over Teplice, Mukov and Křižatek. The monument was created in 2001 to commemorate the air disaster. Today, the memorial offers a place for quiet contemplation and remembrance of the airmen and the broader impact of the war.Visiting the memorial provides an opportunity to connect with history and pay respects to those who fought for freedom.
