The Prašná věž, or Powder Tower, is a significant remnant of Znojmo's extensive medieval fortifications. This prismatic tower marks the southeastern corner of the city's defensive system. Originally constructed as a key element of the city's defenses, the tower's primary function shifted in the 18th century when it was repurposed for storing gunpowder, hence its name. In 1768, disaster struck when the stored gunpowder exploded, causing significant damage to the tower. Despite the damage, the tower was not completely destroyed and has been restored. Today, the Prašná věž houses an engaging exhibition dedicated to the history of Znojmo's fortifications. Visitors can explore the tower as part of a guided tour of the city's ramparts. The exhibit includes a detailed 3D model of the fortifications, providing insights into the city's defenses throughout the ages. The Prašná věž is located in the southern moat, below the Capuchin Garden. A visit to the tower provides not only a glimpse into Znojmo's military history but also a chance to appreciate the strategic importance of the city's location on the Moravian-Austrian border.
