Bedrich Smetana Museum: A Tribute to Czech Music

Located in Prague's Old Town, the Bedrich Smetana Museum is dedicated to the life and works of Bedrich Smetana (1824–1884), a pivotal figure in Czech music. The museum is housed in the former Old Town Waterworks, a striking Neo-Renaissance building designed by Antonín Wiehl and built between 1883 and 1884. The building itself is a work of art, adorned with sgraffito decorations by Josef Ženíšek and Mikoláš Aleš. The museum's exhibits offer a comprehensive look at Smetana's life, from his childhood and early musical studies to his rise as a composer and his later years. Visitors can view personal belongings, handwritten scores, letters, photographs, and newspaper clippings. A highlight is Smetana's piano, which he played during his time in Sweden. The museum also showcases the broader historical and cultural context in which Smetana lived and worked, emphasizing his role in the Czech national revival. Audio samples of his most famous compositions, including 'The Moldau' and excerpts from his operas, are available. Smetana's contributions to Czech music and national identity are immeasurable. As a composer, he wrote his operas in Czech, at a time when German was the predominant language. His opera 'Libuse' was composed for the inauguration of the National Theater, symbolizing the Czech people's search for their national identity through the arts.
