BIO OKO: A Community Cinema Experience

BIO OKO stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of community cinemas. Since 1940, this single-screen theater has been a fixture in the Holešovice district of Prague, offering a curated selection of films, from arthouse gems to cult classics. Designed by architects Jaroslav Stockar-Bernkopf and Josef Šolc, the functionalist building has evolved over the years, adapting to the changing needs of its audience while retaining its unique character. What sets BIO OKO apart is its commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. The cinema boasts a bar and café, making it a popular spot to gather before and after screenings. The auditorium itself features a mix of seating options, including traditional seats, sofas, bean bags, and even deck chairs, inviting moviegoers to relax and enjoy the show. BIO OKO is more than just a place to watch movies; it's a community space that hosts a variety of events, including film festivals, travel lectures, and live broadcasts of opera, ballet, and theater performances. The cinema also caters to families with children, offering morning screenings for seniors and family films. With its diverse programming and laid-back atmosphere, BIO OKO has become a beloved institution in Prague 7. In spring 2025, BIO OKO is scheduled to undergo a six-month renovation to modernize the space while preserving its distinctive atmosphere. The renovations will include upgrades to the main hall, projection room, lobby, and bathrooms, as well as new seating, enhanced acoustics, and stage lighting. During the renovation, the café and garden will remain open.
