Broadway Theatre: A Modern Stage with a Storied Past

Experience world-class ballet and unique theatrical performances in a historic, centrally-located Prague theater.

4.4

The Broadway Theatre stands as a testament to Prague's vibrant cultural scene, blending historical significance with modern entertainment. Located on Na Příkopě street, in the Old Town, the theater occupies a space that was once a state-of-the-art cinema. Built between 1936 and 1938, the original cinema was part of the Broadway Palace, a functionalist building designed by Bohumír Kozák and Antonín Černý. Equipped with luxurious leather armchairs, advanced projection and sound technology, and even hearing aids, the cinema was a premier entertainment venue. During World War II, it was renamed UFA-Victoria, but after the war, it became known as Cinema Sevastopol. In the late 20th century, the cinema faced disputes and eventual closure in 1999. In 2001, Divadlo Broadway, Inc. undertook a complete renovation, transforming the space into the modern, three-story Broadway Theatre that exists today. The renovated theater opened in February 2002 with the musical "Kleopatra". Today, the Broadway Theatre specializes in ballets such as "Swan Lake" and "The Nutcracker," and also features black light theater performances. The theater boasts a large, air-conditioned auditorium with excellent acoustics and views from every seat. It includes a lift, cloakroom, and bars for pre-theater and interval refreshments.
