Discover more about Chateau Melnik

Chateau Mělník, originally a wooden castle dating back to the 9th century, evolved into a stone structure and later a Renaissance and Baroque palace. For centuries, it served as a residence for Bohemian queens. The Lobkowicz family acquired the chateau in 1753 and it was returned to them in 1992 after nationalization during World War II. Inside, visitors can explore lavishly furnished rooms filled with Baroque furniture, 17th and 18th-century paintings, and rare maps. The Great Hall showcases a remarkable collection of vedutas and maps of European cities. The chapel, originally dedicated to Saint Louis, was reconsecrated to Saint Ludmila and features stunning artwork. The chateau's wine cellars, some dating back to the 14th century, offer wine tasting tours. Emperor Charles IV introduced Burgundy grapevines to the region, establishing a winemaking tradition that continues today. The Lobkowicz family expanded their vineyards, producing renowned wines like Ludmila, named after St. Ludmila. Beyond the chateau, Mělník offers additional attractions. The Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, located nearby, houses an ossuary containing the remains of thousands. The Mělník Regional Museum, in a former Capuchin monastery, showcases the region's winemaking heritage. From the chateau's terrace, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the river confluence, Říp Mountain, and the Bohemian Highlands.
