Discover more about Legion Bridge

Spanning the Vltava River, the Legion Bridge is more than just a crossing; it's a testament to Prague's rich history and architectural beauty. Constructed between 1898 and 1901, it replaced the older Emperor Francis I Chain Bridge. The bridge was designed by Antonín Balšánek and Jiří Soukup, and its opening was attended by Emperor Franz Joseph I. Originally named after Emperor Franz Joseph I, the bridge was later renamed to honor the Czechoslovak Legions. These legions fought for the country's independence during World War I. During the Nazi occupation, it was temporarily named Smetana Bridge, and during the communist era, it was known as the First of May Bridge. In 1990, it was finally restored to its current name, Legion Bridge. The bridge showcases a blend of Neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau styles. Built with granite blocks, it features nine arches and two towers (pylons) that once served as toll booths. A wide staircase in the middle of the bridge leads to Střelecký Island, a popular recreational area. Today, the Legion Bridge provides a vital connection for pedestrians and trams, offering picturesque views and a glimpse into Prague's past.
