Lesser Town Bridge Tower: A Gothic Gateway to Prague's Past
Ascend Prague's Lesser Town Bridge Tower for breathtaking views & a journey through centuries of history on the iconic Charles Bridge.
The Lesser Town Bridge Tower (Malostranské mostecké věže) isn't just one tower, but two, each with its own story to tell. Standing at the western end of Charles Bridge, they mark the entrance to the Lesser Town and offer a striking contrast in architectural styles. The taller tower, a magnificent example of post-Hussite Gothic architecture, was constructed in 1464 under King George of Poděbrady. It replaced an older Romanesque tower and was designed to mirror the Old Town Bridge Tower on the opposite end of the Charles Bridge. The tower served as a watchtower and storehouse, and its gallery, 26 meters high, provides stunning views of the Vltava River and Prague's historic center. The niches on its facade hint at planned sculptures that were never realized. Architect Josef Mocker renovated the tower between 1879 and 1883, giving it its current appearance. Connected to the Gothic tower by a walkway is the smaller Judith Tower, the only remaining part of the Judith Bridge, which was destroyed in 1342. This Romanesque tower dates back to the 12th century and predates Charles Bridge. It has been rebuilt in Renaissance style in 1591. For a time, it served as a customs office and even a dungeon. Visitors can climb the taller tower to see an exhibition on the history of Charles Bridge and enjoy panoramic views. From the top, you can see the Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, St. Nicholas Church, and the charming red rooftops of Lesser Town.
