Mníšek pod Brdy Chateau, located in the picturesque landscape of the Brdy Highlands near Prague, invites visitors to step back in time and experience the world of Bohemian nobility. Originally built as a small castle in the late 13th or early 14th century, the chateau has undergone several transformations, reflecting various architectural styles and historical periods. The chateau's history is rich and eventful. It was first mentioned in 1348 and was owned by the Lords of Mitrovice for over 150 years. During the Thirty Years' War in 1639, the chateau was damaged and looted by Swedish troops. In 1655, Servác Engel of Engelsfluss, a Flemish tanner turned aristocrat, purchased the estate and revamped the chateau between 1656 and 1672, giving it its basic design. The last owners, the Kast family, redesigned the internal areas in the early 20th century. Because Baron Kast collaborated with the Nazis during World War II, the chateau was put in the hands of the state during 1945. The chateau's quadrangular building is crowned with three towers, adding to its charm and character. Legend has it that the devil himself failed to complete the fourth tower. Visitors can explore the representative rooms, including the chapel, dining room, and salons, as well as the private rooms of the last owners, furnished with personal belongings and details that evoke the atmosphere of the First Republic. The chateau also offers special tours for children, including fairy-tale and costumed tours. The chateau park, consisting of an upper and lower part, provides a peaceful retreat with beautiful plants and trees. The upper part of the park, open to the public, features a sala terrena offering views of the landscape and castle park below.
