Discover more about New Town Hall

Located on Karlovo náměstí (Charles Square), the New Town Hall is a complex of buildings showcasing Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Founded by Emperor Charles IV in the 14th century, it served as the center of political power for the New Town. The hall's tower, completed in 1456, initially functioned as a fire watchtower and time announcement point. The New Town Hall is known for the First Defenestration of Prague, a pivotal event in 1419 that ignited the Hussite Wars. Hussite supporters stormed the hall and threw Catholic councilors out of the windows, marking a significant moment in Bohemian religious conflict. Over the centuries, the New Town Hall has undergone several renovations, blending Gothic and Renaissance styles. In the 16th century, architect Benedikt Ried added Renaissance elements. The building temporarily served as a courthouse and prison in the 18th century. Today, the New Town Hall hosts exhibitions, social events, and wedding ceremonies. Visitors can climb the 221 steps of the 70-meter tower for panoramic views of Prague. The tower also features a permanent exhibition on the history of the New Town, the town hall, and Charles Square.
