From Old Town Square, walk east along Celetná Street. The Powder Tower will be directly ahead at Náměstí Republiky, approximately a 5-minute walk. No costs involved.

Take the Metro Line B to Náměstí Republiky station. Upon exiting the station, the Powder Tower is just a few steps away. Alternatively, take tram lines 3, 5, 6, 9, 14, or 24 to Náměstí Republiky. A single public transport ticket costs 30 CZK.

Overview

The Prašná brána (Powder Gate) is one of Prague's most iconic historical landmarks, a proud Gothic structure that stands at the entrance to the Old Town. Construction began in 1475 during the reign of King Vladislav II, designed as an attractive entrance to the city rather than a defensive tower. The tower's design was inspired by the Old Town Bridge Tower.Initially called the New Tower, it later became a gunpowder storage facility in the 17th century, giving it the name Powder Gate. Throughout the centuries, the Powder Gate has been a silent witness to countless historical events, including royal processions, making it a symbol of Prague's rich heritage.Visitors can climb the 186 stone steps to the observation gallery at 44 meters for unique views of Prague's historical center. The tower also houses an exhibition detailing its history.
