Staré Purkrabství: A Glimpse into Prague's Past

Staré Purkrabství, or the Old Burgrave's House, is a historical gem nestled within the Vyšehrad complex in Prague. This site provides a unique blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty. Originally built in the Gothic style during the reign of Charles IV in the 14th century, it served as the seat of Vyšehrad's master of provisions. It is the only palace building in the location from this era to survive the pillaging by Hussite militia in 1420. In 1541, the building was destroyed by fire, and was rebuilt between 1553 and 1555 in the Renaissance style by Italian builder Giovanni Ventura. The facade is adorned with sgraffito decorations, and the entrance gateway features the coats-of-arms of prominent burgraves from the 17th and 18th centuries. Inside, visitors can admire preserved 16th-century decorations, including painted wooden ceilings and court frescoes. The Old Burgrave's House connects to the Black Tower within the Prague Castle complex. The Black Tower got its name from smoke stains during the 1541 fire and was used as a prison. Throughout its history, Staré Purkrabství has undergone several renovations, including a substantial renovation from 2003 to 2005 that created an auditorium and a café. Today, the auditorium hosts cultural events and educational programs.
