The Estates Theatre: A Prague Jewel

The Estates Theatre, located in Prague's Old Town, stands as a testament to the city's rich cultural heritage. Built in the late 18th century in the Classicist style, it was originally known as the Nostic Theater, named after Count Franz Anton von Nostitz-Rieneck, who commissioned its construction. The theater aimed to elevate Prague's cultural standing and provide a space for artistic expression accessible to all. The theater is intrinsically linked to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who premiered his opera Don Giovanni here on October 29, 1787, with the composer himself conducting. The Estates Theatre is the only surviving theater where Mozart performed. The theater also saw the premiere of Mozart's opera La Clemenza di Tito in 1791. The Estates Theatre has hosted a wide array of renowned artists throughout its history, including Carl Maria von Weber, Niccolo Paganini, and Arthur Rubinstein. Over the years, the theater has undergone several name changes, reflecting shifts in ownership and political climates. It was acquired by the Bohemian Estates in 1798 and renamed the Royal Theatre of the Estates. In 1862, it became the Provincial German Theatre. In 1948, it was annexed to the National Theatre and renamed the Tyl Theatre. Finally, in 1990, it reclaimed its historical name, the Estates Theatre. Today, the Estates Theatre hosts opera, ballet, and drama performances. It also served as a filming location for the Oscar-winning movie Amadeus.
