4.7

The Mirror Chapel, or Zrcadlová kaple in Czech, is an exquisite gem nestled within the historic heart of Prague. Part of the Clementinum complex, it stands as a testament to architectural elegance and artistic ingenuity. The Clementinum, a former Jesuit college, is the second largest building complex in Prague after Prague Castle. Built between 1722 and 1726, the chapel was originally designed as a ceremonial hall for the Jesuit order, serving as a backdrop for grand events and celebrations. The chapel's name comes from the copious use of mirrors in its decoration, not only on the walls but also on the vault. The architect of the chapel has not been definitively determined, though František Maxmilián Kaňka and Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer are possibilities. The interior of the chapel is a remarkable example of High Baroque style. The harmonious decoration, with marbled walls and floors, stucco ornamentation, and ceiling frescoes, creates a unique sight. The ceiling fresco in five parts, created by Jan Hiebel in 1723, was inspired by the Marian prayer Ave Maria (Hail Mary). Four oil paintings by Václav Vavřinec Rainer correspond to the chapel's consecration to the Annunciation of Our Lady. Two Baroque organs, masterpieces of 18th-century organ builders, are unique features. The original organ, still in the gallery, was likely constructed around 1732 by the Jesuit organist Tomáš Schwarz. The second organ was moved here in the second half of the 20th century from Svatobor near Doupov. The chapel was consecrated in 1784 and again in 1815, serving its purpose until 1923. Since the mid-1930s, the Mirror Chapel has been used for secular purposes, regularly hosting classical music concerts and exhibitions. Today, the space can also be rented for social events and weddings.
