Virgin Mary Under Chain: A Baroque Gem in Prague's Lesser Town

The Church of the Virgin Mary Under Chain, or *Kostel Panny Marie pod Řetězem* in Czech, is a captivating baroque church located in Prague's enchanting Malá Strana district. Its history stretches back to 1169 when King Vladislav II established the first Johannite commandry in Bohemia, entrusting it to the Knights Hospitaller (also known as the Knights of Malta). The church's intriguing name comes from the chain the Knights used to block the Vltava River, ensuring boats paid their customs fees. Another name for it was “the end of the bridge” because it stood close to the Judith (later Charles) Bridge. Originally built as a Romanesque basilica around 1158, the church underwent several transformations. It was rebuilt in Gothic style in the 13th century and then renovated in the 17th century in the Baroque style by Carlo Lurago, after being damaged by fires. Today, remnants of its Gothic past can be seen in its facade and two steeples. Inside, visitors are greeted by an atmosphere of serenity, with beautifully painted ceilings and intricately carved altars. Noteworthy artworks include Karel Skreta's paintings, such as the Madonna blessing the Maltese Knights and the beheading of Saint Barbara. Located between Saská, Lázeňská, and Velkopřevorské Square, the church is part of a large complex belonging to the Order of the Knights of Malta. Visitors can explore the serene garden adjacent to the church, offering a peaceful setting for reflection. The church regularly hosts mass, providing a unique opportunity to experience local customs and community spirit.
