Discover more about Prašná brána

The Prašná brána (Powder Gate), a towering example of Gothic architecture, stands as one of Prague's most iconic landmarks. Constructed in 1475, the gate was designed as a grand entrance to the Old Town, replacing an older gate. King Vladislav II laid the foundation stone, intending it to be a coronation gift to the city. The tower's design was inspired by the Old Town Bridge Tower, showcasing the architectural brilliance of the time. Initially called the New Tower, it later became known as the Powder Gate in the 17th century when it was used to store gunpowder. The tower suffered damage during the Battle of Prague, but its sculptures were replaced in 1876. Today, the Prašná brána stands 65 meters tall, with a viewing gallery at 44 meters accessible via 186 stone steps. Visitors can explore the tower's interior, which often features historical exhibitions, and ascend to the top for stunning panoramic views of Prague's Old Town, including Prague Castle and the Vltava River. The tower marks the beginning of Celetná Street, part of the Royal Route used for короnation processions. The nearby Municipal House complements the tower's neo-Gothic form, together symbolizing Prague's rich history.
