Discover more about Jezerní slať

Jezerní Slať, also known as Kvildská Slať, is a remarkable raised peat bog situated on the plateau of the Šumava Plains, between the villages of Kvilda and Horská Kvilda. As the fourth largest bog in Šumava, it stretches across approximately 208 hectares at an elevation of 1,058 to 1,075 meters. The bog's formation is aided by the region's climate, characterized by high rainfall and consistently low temperatures. In fact, Jezerní Slať is one of the coldest places in the Czech Republic, with a record low temperature of -41.6°C recorded in 1987. This harsh environment fosters the growth of cold-loving plant species like tussock cottongrass and dwarf birch. The area is also home to various cryophilic animal species, including the common viper and viviparous lizard. Visitors can explore Jezerní Slať via a short, 350-meter nature trail that begins at a small parking area off the Kvilda-Horská Kvilda road. The trail continues along a wooden boardwalk, providing easy access and protecting the delicate bog ecosystem. A 7-meter high observation tower offers stunning views of the peat bog and the surrounding landscape, including the distinct peak of Antýgl mountain.
