Discover more about Kostel Povýšení svatého Kříže

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Kostel Povýšení svatého Kříže) in Jihlava is a remarkable example of Gothic architecture with a rich and varied history. Founded in the mid-13th century as part of a Dominican monastery, its design reflects the influence of French Gothic styles, distinguishing it from other buildings of the time. The church's construction was likely a staged process, beginning with the chancel and windows and continuing with the nave and west facade. Over the centuries, the church faced numerous challenges. A fire in 1353 caused the collapse of the nave vault, requiring extensive renovations. In 1871, the church was decommissioned and repurposed as military barracks and storage until 1947, leading to the destruction of its unique interior, including the early Gothic vault. In 2005, the city of Jihlava purchased the church and began a comprehensive restoration project to return it to its original form. Today, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross stands as a testament to Jihlava's rich history and architectural heritage. Visitors can admire the restored Gothic features and a sandstone Pieta sculpture by Jan Štursa. The church hosts religious services, concerts, exhibitions, and lectures, making it a vibrant cultural hub in the city.
