Discover more about Ocean City Boardwalk

The Ocean City Boardwalk, officially known as Atlantic Avenue, is a quintessential American boardwalk experience. Dating back to 1902, it began as a simple wooden walkway constructed by oceanfront hotel owners to provide their guests with a convenient way to stroll along the beach. Initially, the boardwalk was a seasonal fixture, rolled up and stored during the winter months. In the 1920s, the boardwalk expanded, becoming a central hub of activity with new attractions, food stands, and shops. Historic staples like Trimper's Rides, dating back to the late 19th century, became fixtures. The boardwalk has faced numerous challenges, including damage from powerful storms, but each time, Ocean City has rebuilt it stronger and smarter. Today, the 2.5-mile boardwalk stretches from the Inlet at South 1st Street to 27th Street. Visitors can enjoy a wide array of activities, including amusement parks, arcades, and the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum. The boardwalk is also a culinary destination, with iconic eateries like Thrasher's French Fries (since 1929) and Fisher's Popcorn (since 1937). At night, the boardwalk comes alive with music and free family activities on the beach. The Boardwalk Tram provides a convenient way to travel its entire length. The Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum, located on the boardwalk, offers a glimpse into the history of the U.S. Life-Saving Service. The building itself is a historic structure, originally built in 1891 and later moved to its current location at the Inlet. The museum features exhibits on the heroic men who rescued ships in distress off the coast of Ocean City. The boardwalk is wheelchair accessible, with a mostly flat and wide pathway. Beach access points are available along the boardwalk, and beach wheelchairs can be requested from lifeguard stations.
