Fort Delaware, standing tall on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River, is a well-preserved testament to 19th-century military architecture and a significant landmark in Civil War history. Originally constructed in 1859 to protect the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia, the fort quickly transformed into a prison for Confederate soldiers. During the Civil War, Fort Delaware housed up to 12,500 Confederate prisoners, earning a reputation as the Union's counterpart to the infamous Andersonville prison. Today, costumed interpreters bring the fort's history to life, recreating scenes from the summer of 1864. The firing of the Columbiad cannon is a highlight, offering a booming reminder of the fort's military purpose. Pea Patch Island itself is a nature preserve and one of the largest Atlantic Coast nesting sites for herons, egrets, and ibises north of Florida. Visitors can explore the island's trails and observe the diverse birdlife. The island's history extends beyond the Civil War, having served in both World War I and World War II. Fort Delaware State Park was established in 1951, ensuring the preservation of this unique historical and natural site.
