Discover more about Nemours Estate

Nemours Estate, a breathtaking testament to early 20th-century opulence, invites visitors to step into a world of French-inspired grandeur in Wilmington, Delaware. This 200-acre estate, conceived by Alfred I. du Pont as a gift for his second wife, Alicia, showcases a magnificent 77-room mansion designed in the Louis XVI style, reminiscent of a French château. The name 'Nemours' pays homage to the French town associated with the Du Pont family's ancestry. Built between 1909 and 1910, the mansion's interiors are adorned with rare 18th-century French furniture, notable antiques, and an eclectic collection of artwork and tapestries. Among the treasures, visitors can discover a Louis XVI musical clock and other decorative arts. The mansion offers self-guided tours, allowing guests to explore its many rooms and appreciate the intricate details of its design and furnishings. Knowledgeable staff are available throughout the property to provide historical context and answer questions. The formal French gardens at Nemours are considered among the finest in North America. Inspired by the gardens of Versailles, they feature long, tree-lined walkways, geometric shrubbery arrangements, a Neoclassical Temple of Love, and numerous fountains and statues. The gardens also include a one-acre reflecting pool, adding to the estate's serene atmosphere. Visitors can explore the Boxwood Garden, designed in the French parterre style, and the Colonnade, a memorial to Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours. Nemours Estate is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm, typically from April to December. It is located on the campus of Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware. The estate provides free parking for visitors.
