The Old State House, located on The Green in Dover, Delaware, is a tangible link to the birth of the United States. Completed in 1791, the building served as Delaware's capitol building from 1792 to 1933 and also housed the Kent County Courthouse until 1873. Delaware ratified the Federal Constitution nearby on December 7, 1787, securing its place as the First State. The Old State House is an example of Middle Georgian architecture. The building's facade features a fanlight over the central door and a Palladian window on the second floor. Inside, visitors can explore the 18th-century-style courtroom and the former chambers of the state legislature. The House chamber features portraits by Thomas Sully of Commodores Jacob Jones and Thomas Macdonough, War of 1812 heroes. The Senate chamber displays a portrait of George Washington by Denis A. Volozan. The Old State House has undergone several renovations throughout its history. In 1873, it was remodeled in the Victorian style, but it was restored to its original colonial appearance in 1912.
