Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph: A Downtown San Jose Landmark

Discover faith, history, and architectural beauty at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph in downtown San Jose, a California Historical Landmark.

4.7

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph is more than just a church; it's a historical landmark and a spiritual sanctuary in the heart of San Jose. The original St. Joseph's Church was built on this site in 1803, becoming the first non-mission parish in California. That original adobe structure, named San Jose de Guadalupe, succumbed to earthquakes, as did its successor. A third church was destroyed by fire in 1875. The present Cathedral Basilica, dedicated in 1877 and completed in 1885, showcases a Romanesque Revival architectural style. Its majestic dome and towering bell towers make it a prominent feature of the San Jose skyline. Inside, visitors are greeted by soaring ceilings, intricate stained glass windows, and ornate decorations that create an atmosphere of reverence and peace. The Odell pipe organ, built in 1886, is a highlight, boasting 40,000 parts and 27 ranks. The stained-glass windows in the East Transept depict biblical tales. In 1985, the Vatican approved St. Joseph's Church to become the cathedral for the Diocese of San Jose, provided it was fully restored. Pope John Paul II designated it a minor basilica in 1997. Today, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph is a California Historical Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It continues to serve as a vibrant center for worship, community events, and spiritual growth, welcoming people of all backgrounds.
