Vaulted Dining in Ribe’s Heart: Restaurant Vægterkælderen
Experience centuries of Danish hospitality and culinary tradition in Ribe’s most atmospheric half-timbered inn, right in the heart of Denmark’s oldest town.
Weis Stue is Ribe’s most iconic inn and restaurant, set in an atmospheric 17th-century half-timbered building on the town's historic square. Visitors experience the charm of creaky floors, painted ceilings, and candle-lit tables, all while enjoying Danish classics and local brews. The building’s age, preserved architecture, and centuries-old role as a social hub make it a must-see for lovers of living history and traditional hospitality.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Walking
Weis Stue stands right on Ribe’s main square, steps from the famous cathedral. From any point in the old town center, stroll through lively pedestrian lanes lined with colorful timbered houses and small shops. The journey takes 3–6 minutes on foot. The inn’s gabled roof and low-slung façade are easy to spot beside the historic market cross.
Taxi
A taxi from Ribe Station or the town outskirts reaches the square in about 4–8 minutes, usually costing 60–90 DKK. Drop-off is possible at the edge of the square, but note that the very center is pedestrianized.
Car
Visitors arriving by car should use the municipal parking lots on the periphery of the old town—these are signposted and typically cost 10–20 DKK per hour. Expect a 5–10-minute walk through Ribe’s medieval quarter to reach Weis Stue; parking immediately nearby is restricted or time-limited.
