Discover more about Schackenborg Castle

Schackenborg Castle stands as a testament to Denmark's rich tapestry of history and architecture. Originally known as Møgeltønderhus, this site served as a strategic stronghold for the bishops of Ribe, safeguarding the region against southern incursions. With the Reformation's sweeping changes, the estate transitioned to royal ownership. In the 1660s, Count Hans von Schack, a distinguished military leader, transformed the aging fortress into the magnificent Baroque castle we admire today. For over three centuries, the von Schack family resided within these walls, each generation adding layers to its storied past. In 1978, the castle returned to the Danish royal family, and from 1993 to 2014, it was the cherished home of Prince Joachim and his family. Today, Schackenborg Castle is managed by a dedicated foundation, ensuring its preservation and accessibility to the public. Visitors are invited to traverse the castle's stately rooms, adorned with intricate stucco ceilings and period furnishings that echo the grandeur of bygone eras. The castle gardens, once exclusive, now welcome guests to meander through meticulously manicured landscapes, offering moments of tranquility and reflection. Guided tours provide deeper insights into the castle's history, from tales of the 'Evil Countess' to the legend of Hans Schack II's silver arm. Seasonal events, such as the Schackenborg Music Festival, infuse the castle with contemporary vibrancy, bridging the past with the present. A visit to Schackenborg is incomplete without exploring the adjacent Slotsgade, renowned as one of Denmark's most picturesque village streets. The nearby Schackenborg Slotskro offers culinary delights, allowing guests to savor traditional South Jutlandic cuisine in a historic setting. Whether you're a history enthusiast, architecture aficionado, or simply seeking a serene retreat, Schackenborg Castle promises an enriching experience that captures the essence of Denmark's royal heritage.
