Discover more about Papillote Wilderness Retreat

Papillote Wilderness Retreat, Dominica's original eco-inn, has been welcoming guests for over half a century. Founded in 1969 by Anne Jno Baptiste, this family-run retreat is nestled on the verdant slopes of Morne Macaque, in the heart of the Roseau Valley near the village of Trafalgar. Surrounded by four acres of meticulously cultivated botanical gardens, Papillote showcases over 1,000 plant species, including aroids, begonias, bromeliads, gingers, heliconias, and indigenous orchids. Walking paths crisscross cold and hot mineral streams, leading to themed glades. Two waterfalls cascade down the mountainside within the garden's boundaries, creating cold water streams that flow to the Roseau River. A series of volcanic hot pools punctuate the landscape, offering guests a relaxing, mineral-laden bathing experience. Papillote offers day visitors the opportunity to explore the tropical gardens and bathe in the volcanic hot pools. Overnight guests can choose from a selection of rooms and self-catering suites, each offering garden and mountain views. The retreat also features a restaurant serving traditional Creole cuisine made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Beyond the retreat, guests can explore nearby attractions such as the towering Trafalgar Falls, a short walk away. Other nearby attractions include the Boiling Lake, Titou Gorge, and Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Papillote is committed to sustainable tourism, with eco-conscious operations that include solar power, rainwater harvesting, and support for local communities. Despite challenges like Hurricane Maria in 2017, the gardens have been restored, offering guests an exceptional experience.
