Fort Shirley, nestled within Dominica's Cabrits National Park, stands as a testament to the island's rich and often turbulent history. Constructed in 1765 by the British, the fort was a key defensive structure, named after Governor Thomas Shirley. The French significantly expanded it during their occupation from 1778 to 1784.Fort Shirley is known for the 1802 revolt of the 8th West India Regiment, where African slave soldiers mutinied, influencing the Mutiny Act of 1807 and freeing all serving soldiers recruited as slaves in the British Army. The fort's Georgian architecture, designed by Fraser and Bruce, utilized the natural defenses of a volcanic crater. It housed over 50 buildings, including gun batteries, cisterns, and barracks for 600 men.Abandoned in 1854, Fort Shirley remained under British Admiralty control until 1901. Since 1982, Dominican historian Dr. Lennox Honychurch has led restoration efforts, transforming it into a multi-purpose site for tourism, events, and education. Today, visitors can explore restored sections like the Officers' Quarters, Soldiers' Barracks, and ramparts, while enjoying stunning views and connecting with Dominica's past.
