Walking
If you are staying in Puerto Ayora, start by walking towards the main street, Avenida Charles Darwin. From there, head towards the Fish Market. Continue along the avenue until you reach the intersection with Calle de la Lobería. Turn left onto Calle de la Lobería and continue walking for about 10-15 minutes until you reach the Galapagos National Park Information Center. This is your first major landmark. From the information center, ask for directions to the Lava Tunnel, as it is a well-known location and the staff can provide you with the most current walking routes.
Guided Tour
Another option is to join a guided tour to the Lava Tunnel. Many local tour operators in Puerto Ayora offer packages that include transportation to the site, often combined with other attractions. Check at the tour offices along Avenida Charles Darwin, where you can book a tour that includes a visit to the Lava Tunnel. This is a hassle-free option, as the guides will take care of all the navigation and provide valuable information about the area.
Bike Rental
For a more active approach, consider renting a bike in Puerto Ayora. There are several rental shops along Avenida Charles Darwin. Once you have your bike, head towards the main road leading out of the town towards the highlands. Follow the signs to the Lava Tunnel, which is located about 14 km from Puerto Ayora. The ride takes around 1-2 hours depending on your pace. Be sure to bring water and wear sunscreen, as it can get quite sunny along the route.
Use Lava Tunnel as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
