Metro
If you're near Tahrir Square, take the Cairo Metro Line 1 (the red line) towards Helwan. Get off at the 'Sadat' station. From there, exit the station and head towards Mohamed Mahmoud Street. Walk straight until you reach the intersection with El-Darb El-Ahmar Street. Turn right onto El-Darb El-Ahmar, and continue walking for about 10 minutes until you arrive at Al-Azhar Mosque.
Bus
From Tahrir Square, you can catch a microbus heading towards 'El Gamaliya' or 'Al-Azhar'. Ask the driver to drop you off at Al-Azhar Mosque. The ride should take approximately 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic. Once you get off, you will see the mosque directly ahead.
Walking
If you are close to the Khan el-Khalili market, it's a pleasant walk to Al-Azhar Mosque. Exit the market and head northwest on Al-Azhar Street. Continue walking for about 15 minutes until you reach the mosque, which will be on your left. The area is filled with shops and local vendors, so enjoy the sights along the way!
Taxi
You can easily find a taxi in Cairo; just make sure it has a working meter. Tell the driver 'Al-Azhar Mosque' or show them the address 'El-Darb El-Ahmar, El Gamaliya'. The ride from central Cairo should take about 10-15 minutes depending on traffic. Make sure to confirm the fare if the meter is not used.
