Cairo Tower: A Lotus in the Sky

Rising 187 meters (614 feet) above the city, the Cairo Tower ( برج القاهرة, Borg El-Qāhira) is an iconic landmark offering breathtaking panoramic views of the sprawling metropolis. Located on Gezira Island in the Nile River, the tower's design, conceived by Egyptian architect Naoum Shebib, is inspired by the lotus plant, a powerful symbol in ancient Egyptian culture representing rebirth and rejuvenation. Built between 1956 and 1961, the Cairo Tower was for many years the tallest structure in Egypt and North Africa. The tower consists of 16 floors and rests on a base of Aswan granite stones, the same material used by ancient Egyptians for their temples and tombs. An elevator whisks visitors to the top in just 45 seconds, revealing a stunning panorama of Cairo, the Nile, the pyramids, and the Saladin Citadel. At the summit, you'll find an observation deck providing 360-degree views of the city. Telescopes are available for closer inspection of Cairo's many landmarks. The tower also features a revolving restaurant where diners can savor a meal while enjoying the ever-changing cityscape.
