Discover more about Cairo tower

The Cairo Tower, known in Arabic as Borg El-Qāhira, is a free-standing concrete tower located on Gezira Island in the heart of Cairo. Standing at 187 meters (614 feet), it was the tallest structure in Egypt for 37 years. Designed by Egyptian architect Naoum Shebib, its partially open lattice-work is inspired by the lotus plant, an iconic symbol of Ancient Egypt. Construction of the Cairo Tower took place between 1956 and 1961. The tower consists of 16 floors and rests on a base of Aswan granite, the same stone used to build ancient Egyptian temples. A team of 500 Egyptian workers built the tower. Originally, the funds for the tower's construction came from the U.S. government as a gift to President Gamal Abdel Nasser, but he chose to use the money to build the tower as a symbol of Egyptian independence and resistance. Today, the Cairo Tower is a major tourist attraction, offering visitors a 360-degree view of Cairo from its observation deck. The tower also features a revolving restaurant where diners can enjoy a meal while taking in the ever-changing views of the city. The tower is open daily from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
