Cairo Tower ( برج القاهرة, Borg El-Qāhira) is a free-standing concrete tower located in Cairo, Egypt. Standing at 187 meters (614 feet), it was the tallest structure in Egypt for 37 years. Situated on Gezira Island in the Nile River, close to downtown Cairo, the tower offers panoramic views of the city, making it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.Designed by Egyptian architect Naoum Shebib, the Cairo Tower's partially open lattice-work is inspired by the lotus plant, an iconic symbol of ancient Egypt. Construction took place between 1956 and 1961, with the tower officially opening on April 11, 1961. The tower consists of 16 floors and rests on a base of Aswan granite stones, the same material used by ancient Egyptians.Visitors can ascend to the observation deck for a 360-degree view of Cairo, including landmarks such as the Giza Pyramids, the Nile River, and the Citadel of Saladin. The tower also features a revolving restaurant, offering a unique dining experience with ever-changing views of the city. The tower played a role in Egypt's political history, as it was built with funds redirected from a U.S. government grant intended for President Nasser, symbolizing Egypt's sovereignty and resistance.
