Edfu Temple Travel Guide

The Temple of Edfu stands as a testament to ancient Egyptian civilization, dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god of the sky. Construction began in 237 BC during the reign of Ptolemy III and was completed in 57 BC under Ptolemy XII. This remarkably well-preserved temple provides invaluable insights into the language, myth, and religion of the Hellenistic period in Egypt.Edfu Temple is the largest temple dedicated to Horus and Hathor of Dendera and was the center of several festivals sacred to Horus. Each year, Hathor traveled south from her temple at Denderah to visit Horus at Edfu, marking their sacred marriage with a great festival and pilgrimage. The temple's inscriptions detail its construction and preserve information about the mythical interpretation of temples as the Island of Creation.The temple remained buried under layers of settlement debris for millennia, which contributed to the survival of its architectural and decorative elements. In 1860, French archaeologist Auguste Mariette began the work of freeing the temple from the sands. The temple is fronted by massive pylons adorned with scenes of Ptolemy XII conquering his enemies. Two large granite statues of Horus as a falcon stand guard before the pylons. Entering the temple, visitors encounter a large Peristyle court lined with columns featuring floral capitals. Beyond the court are two Hypostyle Halls, the first depicting the temple's foundation and the king engaged in worship, and the second illustrating Horus' journey in a sacred bark accompanied by Hathor. From the second Hypostyle Hall, the Transverse Hall leads to the Sanctuary of the temple.Today, Edfu Temple is a major tourist destination and a frequent stop for Nile River cruises. A visitor center and paved parking lot were added in 2005, and a lighting system was installed in 2006 to allow for night visits.
