History of Bole

From Periphery to Urban District

Bole developed on the eastern side of Addis Ababa as the city expanded beyond its older central areas. The name is associated with the locality historically known as Bole, which was incorporated into the widening urban landscape rather than established as a planned colonial-style quarter. For much of its development, the area combined roads leading out of the city with residential compounds, local commerce and open land. Its position on the eastern approach made it increasingly important as Addis Ababa grew and modern transport infrastructure reached farther from the historic core.

The establishment and later expansion of Addis Ababa’s international airport transformed Bole’s role within the capital.
