Merkato Was the Highlight of Our Visit

We booked the half-day city exploration with Danakil Depression Tours as a group of friends and enjoyed seeing a different side of Addis Ababa. The tour was short enough to fit into our schedule but still gave us enough time to experience two very different parts of the city. Entoto was a pleasant beginning to the tour. We enjoyed the cooler environment, the scenery, and the views over Addis Ababa. The guide from Danakil Depression Tours also gave us historical information that helped us understand why Entoto is important to the city. For our group, Merkato was the highlight. The market was energetic and full of activity, and we enjoyed seeing the variety of products and local businesses. It was interesting to observe everyday life and learn about the importance of the market to Addis Ababa. Our guide was helpful throughout the visit and gave us explanations whenever we had questions. Having someone familiar with the area made the experience much easier and more enjoyable. The half-day schedule worked well for us because we still had time for other plans afterward.

5 Days Exploring Northern Ethiopia

We booked a 5-day tour through northern Ethiopia with Danakil Depression Tours, visiting Bahir Dar, Gondar, the Simien Mountains and Lalibela. We knew beforehand that trying to see all these places in five days would make the trip quite busy, but we wanted to see as much as possible during our time in Ethiopia. We started in Bahir Dar and spent time around Lake Tana and the historic sites in the area. It was a nice introduction to the region, and we enjoyed seeing a quieter side of Ethiopia before moving on. From Bahir Dar we continued to Gondar. The old royal compound and historic churches were interesting, and our guide gave us background about the history instead of just taking us from one place to another. We enjoyed having the explanations because otherwise it would have been difficult to understand the importance of some of the sites. The Simien Mountains were probably the biggest surprise of the trip. The scenery is beautiful, with huge valleys and dramatic cliffs. We also saw gelada monkeys, which was something we were really hoping to see. The weather was a little unpredictable while we were there, but it actually made the mountains look even more dramatic at times. Then we headed to Lalibela. Seeing the rock-hewn churches in person was very different from seeing them in pictures. Walking between the churches and seeing how they were carved into the rock was one of the moments that really stayed with us. We also appreciated having a guide who could explain the history and religious significance of the sites. Because we were covering four destinations in only five days, there was quite a lot of driving and some early starts. It was definitely tiring at times, but we expected that when we chose this itinerary. The advantage was that we got to experience several very different parts of northern Ethiopia in one trip. One thing that made the trip easier was Mickey, the owner of Danakil Depression Tours. From the first time we contacted him, he was very fast with his replies. Whenever we had a question, we usually didn't have to wait long for an answer. More importantly, he continued to follow up with us throughout the tour, rather than just arranging everything and leaving us on our own. There were a few small changes and practical things to sort out along the way, as can happen on a busy trip, but it was reassuring knowing that we could contact Mickey and get a quick response. Overall, it was a busy but rewarding five days. Bahir Dar, Gondar, the Simien Mountains and Lalibela each offered something completely different, from Lake Tana and Ethiopian history to mountain landscapes and the incredible churches of Lalibela. A big thank you to Mickey and the team for organizing everything and, especially, for the quick communication and follow-up before and during our trip. That personal attention made a real difference to our experience.

Addis Ababa: Authentic Ethiopian Food & Cuisine Tasting Tour

Pick Oli and have a GREAT time!

The food and coffee tour was absolutely AMAZING! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my tour. And my tour guide, Oli, played a major role! I found Oli to be full of information, "all things Ethiopia", so much so, I literally hurried back to my hotel room to record all that I had learned. I was taught and participated in the process of making injera. And learned that I will not be getting married anytime soon! You will understand when you attend. :) I was taught and participated in the process of the coffee ceremony which I found to be a beautiful way of bringing community together. We then went to two restaurants and ate and drank until we couldn't. Both restaurants were amazing. The first one was owned by a woman who happened to be there AND greeted and welcomed me which I thought was very kind of her. So, needless to say, I would most definitely recommend this tour. I've already booked my city tour with Oli on tomorrow, can't wait!
