If you're traveling by car from any location in Gurage, start by heading towards the town of Wolkite, which is approximately 30 km from most central locations in Gurage. Follow the main road (Ethiopian Highway 1) towards Wolkite. Once in Wolkite, continue on the road towards the town of Butajira. After about 15 km, you will reach a fork in the road; take the left fork towards the direction of the Lake Zeway area. Continue for approximately 20 km until you see signs for Aruro Island. The island is accessible by a short boat ride from the nearest jetty, which is well-marked.

To reach Aruro Island via public transportation, first take a minibus from your location in Gurage to Wolkite. The minibuses are frequent and should cost around 30 Ethiopian Birr (ETB). Once in Wolkite, catch another minibus heading towards Butajira, which will cost approximately 20 ETB. Upon reaching Butajira, you will need to find a local taxi or a motorbike taxi to take you to the nearest jetty for Aruro Island. This taxi ride will cost around 50-100 ETB depending on negotiation. From there, you can take a boat to Aruro Island, which usually costs about 100 ETB per person for a round trip.
