Experience Sanetti Plateau

Getting There

  • Car

    From the center of Gurage, head southwest towards the town of Butajira. The road is well-marked and takes approximately 2 hours. Once in Butajira, take the road leading to the Bale Mountains, which is well-signposted. Continue for about 35 kilometers until you reach the entrance of Bale Mountain National Park. You may need to pay an entrance fee, which is approximately 100 Ethiopian Birr per person. Inside the park, follow the signs towards Sanetti Plateau, which is around 25 kilometers from the entrance. The roads can be rough, so a 4WD vehicle is recommended.

  • Public Transportation

    Start at the main bus station in Gurage, where you can find buses heading to Butajira. The bus ride takes about 2 hours, and the fare is roughly 30 Ethiopian Birr. Upon arrival in Butajira, you will need to hire a taxi or find a shared minibus that goes towards the Bale Mountains. This second leg of the journey may cost around 50 to 100 Ethiopian Birr per person. Once you arrive at the entrance of Bale Mountain National Park, there will be an entrance fee of about 100 Ethiopian Birr. From there, continue by taxi or arranged transport to reach Sanetti Plateau, which is approximately 25 kilometers inside the park.
