Discover more about Eysturoy Tunnel

The Eysturoy Tunnel (Eysturoyartunnilin) is an impressive feat of engineering in the Faroe Islands, connecting the two most populated islands, Streymoy and Eysturoy. Opened in December 2020, this 11.2-kilometer (6.9 miles) sub-sea tunnel includes the world's first and only underwater roundabout. Located 72.6 meters (238 feet) below the surface of the Skálafjørður fjord, the roundabout is adorned with a sculpture by Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson, featuring color-changing lights and representing a traditional Faroese chain dance. Tune your radio to 97.0 FM for music composed specifically for the tunnel. The tunnel has significantly reduced travel times, for example, the journey from Tórshavn to Runavík/Strendur has been cut from 55 kilometers (34 miles) to just 17 kilometers (11 miles), shortening the drive from 64 minutes to 16 minutes. The tunnel connects the capital city of Tórshavn to both sides of the Skálafjørður fjord. The Eysturoy Tunnel is the third sub-sea tunnel built in the Faroe Islands, with the Vágatunnilin and Norðoyartunnilin preceding it. The Sandoyartunnilin is the fourth sub-sea tunnel. Driving through the Eysturoy Tunnel is more than just a means of transportation; it's an experience. The tunnel showcases the innovative spirit of the Faroese people and their ability to overcome geographical challenges.
