    Discover more about Gjógv

Gjógv, pronounced "Jjogv" (literally gorge or geo), derives its name from the 200-meter-long sea-filled gorge that serves as the village's natural harbor. For centuries, this gorge has been the lifeline of the village, providing a safe haven for fishing boats. First mentioned in 1584, Gjógv has a rich history rooted in fishing and the selling of dried and salted fish. The village's population peaked in the 1940s, but has since declined as many residents have moved away. Despite its small size, Gjógv offers essential services for visitors, including a guesthouse, café, and public restrooms. Attractions in Gjógv include the Gjógv Church, dating back to 1929, the first church in the Faroes to offer services in the Faroese language. Opposite the church stands a sculpture memorializing fishermen lost at sea. Hikes around Gjógv offer incredible views of the village and surrounding landscapes.
