Discover more about Gjógv Natural Harbour

Gjógv Natural Harbour, located in the village of Gjógv on the northeastern tip of Eysturoy Island in the Faroe Islands, is a captivating testament to nature's beauty and the enduring spirit of the Faroese people. The village, named after the 200-meter-long gorge (Gjógv means "gorge" in Faroese), has relied on this natural harbor for centuries. Historically, Gjógv thrived on fishing and the sale of dried and salted fish. At one time, as many as 13 fishing boats sailed from its harbor. Today, while the population has dwindled from a peak of 210 in 1950 to around 19 permanent residents , the village welcomes approximately 35,000 visitors each year. The natural harbor itself is a remarkable sight, with steep cliffs surrounding a narrow, sea-filled gorge. Stairs lead down to the gorge, allowing visitors to appreciate the dramatic landscape and the power of the sea. The village also features a charming church dating back to 1929, the first in the Faroe Islands to hold services in Faroese. A sculpture across from the church serves as a memorial to fishermen lost at sea, a poignant reminder of the village's maritime history. Beyond the harbor, Gjógv offers opportunities for hiking and exploring the surrounding natural beauty. A popular hike leads up the cliffs, providing panoramic views of the coastline and the chance to spot puffins during the summer months. The Ambadalur Valley to the south offers a lush contrast to the rocky shoreline, with rare birds and unique biodiversity.
