    Discover more about Svartafoss Waterfall

Svartafoss Waterfall, whose name translates to 'Black Falls', is a captivating natural attraction situated a mere 2 kilometers north of Tórshavn's old town, nestled in Hoydalsá. This charming waterfall flows through the valley of Hoydalar, historically marking the boundary between Tórshavn and Hoyvík. Svartafoss is particularly stunning after periods of rain, when the water flow is at its most impressive. However, even in the summer, when the water dwindles, the dark stones behind the falls are revealed, lending the waterfall its distinctive name. Photographs taken over the past century indicate that the waterfall's appearance has remained remarkably consistent. Historically, residents of Tórshavn frequented this area to gather sod for their fireplaces, and Sunday walks to enjoy the scenery were a common pastime. An old sheepfold, a relic of the area's agricultural past, still stands near the waterfall. Although Svartafoss now lies within the expanding city limits, the Tórshavn city council has designated the area around the waterfall and Hoydalsá as a protected natural area. Trails have been carefully constructed, inviting visitors to explore and appreciate this scenic locale. Svartafoss offers a serene escape from the bustle of city life, with opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and simply enjoying the soothing sounds of nature.
