Discover more about Tjørnuvík

Tjørnuvík, pronounced 'Chu-nu-vik', is a captivating village embraced by steep mountains and the North Atlantic Ocean on the island of Streymoy. This secluded haven, one of the oldest villages in the Faroe Islands, dates back to the Viking Age, with archaeological finds confirming settlements from around the year 1000. Nestled in a valley with no through roads, Tjørnuvík offers stunning views of the Risin and Kellingin sea stacks, also known as the Giant and the Witch. Legend says these are two giants sent from Iceland to drag the Faroe Islands north, but they were turned to stone when the sun rose. The village itself is small, with no more than 55 houses and small streams cascading down the mountainsides. The black sand beach is a popular spot for travelers to stroll and take in the scenery. The village also has its own charming white wooden church with a red roof. For those seeking outdoor adventures, a hiking path leads from Tjørnuvík to Saksun, offering breathtaking views of the landscape. The village is also known for its hymn singing tradition, Kingo-songs, which originate from the Danish hymn writer Thomas Kingo. Despite its small size, Tjørnuvík is one of the most visited destinations in the Faroe Islands, offering a sense of serenity and a chance to connect with the islands' remote beauty.
