Discover more about Gasadalur

Gásadalur, nestled on the western edge of Vágar Island, offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and Faroese charm. Surrounded by towering mountains, including Vágar's highest peak, Árnafjall, the village overlooks the Mykinesfjørður. The iconic Múlafossur Waterfall is the star attraction, cascading dramatically from the cliffs into the North Atlantic. Until 2004, Gásadalur was one of the most isolated settlements in the Faroe Islands. Accessible only by boat or a strenuous hike over the mountains, the village maintained a unique, unspoiled character. The construction of the Gásadalstunnilin tunnel changed this, providing easy access by car and bus. Despite its increased accessibility, Gásadalur has retained its charm. Visitors can explore the village, enjoy local food at Gásadalsgarður, and purchase souvenirs at the Uanni shop. Hiking trails offer panoramic views, and in the summer, puffins can be spotted on the cliffs. The village provides a glimpse into a traditional Faroese way of life, where sheep farming and close-knit community bonds remain strong. Historically, Gásadalur's isolation shaped its traditions. Before 1873, villagers had to carry their dead over the mountain to be buried in Bøur. The arduous journey led to the creation of resting places like Líksteinurin (Corpse Stone). Today, Gásadalur offers a unique and unforgettable experience, where visitors can appreciate the raw beauty of the Faroe Islands and the resilience of its people.
