Getting There

  • Car

From Lautoka City, drive approximately 15 km inland towards Abaca Village, the 'base camp' for Koroyanitu Heritage Park. The road to the village can be rough, especially during the rainy season, so a 4WD vehicle is recommended. As of April 2023, improvements have been made to the road, but it's still advisable to check conditions beforehand. Once you reach the access road, it's about a 20-minute drive up the mountain to Abaca. Park entry fee is FJD $30 for tourists.

  • Taxi

Hire a 4WD taxi from Lautoka to Abaca Village. Arrange the taxi in advance, as not all taxis are familiar with the route. Expect to pay a reasonable fare, and confirm the price before starting the journey. Park entry fee is FJD $30 for tourists.

Discover more about Koroyanitu National Park

Koroyanitu National Heritage Park, located on Viti Levu, Fiji, is a 35-square-kilometer sanctuary established in 1989 to protect Fiji's unique flora and fauna and offer a glimpse into the country's interior. Unlike Fiji's famous beaches, Koroyanitu boasts lush rainforests, rugged mountains, and cascading waterfalls. The park is home to Mount Batilamu (also known as Mount Evans), Fiji's fourth highest peak, offering panoramic views of the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. Hiking enthusiasts can explore a variety of trails, including the challenging Mount Batilamu Trail, shorter waterfall treks to Tunutunu and Savu-i-One Falls, and the Mount Koroyanitu Summit Trail. These trails wind through diverse ecosystems, showcasing native plants and providing opportunities for birdwatching. Keep an eye out for rare birds like the Masked Shining Parrot and the Fiji Parrotfinch. Koroyanitu is also steeped in cultural history. Abaca Village serves as the park's base camp, offering visitors a chance to experience traditional Fijian life. Engage with the local community, learn about their customs, and even arrange homestays or village lunches. The park's community-based conservation model ensures that local villagers play a central role in maintaining the landscape and guiding visitors, promoting sustainable tourism while preserving cultural heritage. Founded to protect the Dry Rainforest Ecosystem, Koroyanitu offers a unique lens to explore the true culture and nature of Fiji.
