Volivoli Cave: A Subterranean Wonder
Explore Fiji's ancient past and natural beauty within the depths of Volivoli Cave, a unique archaeological and geological site near Cuvu.
Volivoli Cave, also known as Sand Cave, is located near Cuvu on the Coral Coast of Viti Levu, Fiji, and presents a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The cave contains extinct megafaunal remains, a feature unique in Fiji, dating back 20,000 to 25,000 years. These remains include a crocodilian, tortoise, giant iguana, boid snake, three frog species, and several birds, including a previously unknown giant megapode and pigeon. Archaeological findings also include three human burials and fragments of adzes, undecorated pottery, and shells. The cave's history extends beyond its natural formations, with evidence of human activity dating back two millennia. Combustion features in the cave deposits have been radiocarbon dated to between 260-1013 CE, indicating early human use. Visiting Volivoli Cave offers an adventurous experience, exploring its impressive chambers and geological features. The cave requires some preparation to visit, and it is recommended to explore only the first 70 meters due to narrow and low sections. Good shoes, lights, and gloves are recommended. The cave also features a man-made wall at the entrance, likely from when Yadua Village was located above the cave more than 200 years ago. Despite its historical and natural significance, the cave faces ongoing conservation challenges. Natural processes and human intervention, such as cane farming since the 1970s, have led to sediment removal and redistribution within the cave. Graffiti and physical contact with speleothems also pose threats.
