Discover more about Louhisaari Manor

Louhisaari Manor, also known as Villnäs slott in Swedish, is a captivating landmark in Askainen, a municipality of Masku, in Southwest Finland. This historic baroque manor house is best known as the birthplace and childhood home of Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, a celebrated Finnish military leader, statesman, and the sixth president of Finland. The manor's history dates back to the 15th century when it was acquired by the Fleming family. For over 300 years, the Fleming family held prominent positions in the Kingdom of Sweden (including Finland). In 1655, Herman Claesson Fleming, an admiral and governor of Finland, constructed the manor. The Mannerheim family acquired the estate in 1795. Carl Gustaf Mannerheim, a Finnish entomologist and governor, and his grandson Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim resided here. The main building, completed in the 1650s, showcases rare palatial architecture in Finland. The manor's design reflects the styles of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The first and third floors are restored to their 17th-century style, while the second floor reflects the 18th and 19th-century designs. An English-style landscape park surrounds the house, complete with walking paths, a fruit garden, and a herb garden created in the spirit of Finnish botanist Pehr Kalm. In 1961, the Finnish State acquired Louhisaari and opened it as a museum in 1967. The museum showcases Finnish life from the 17th to 19th centuries.
